TikTok trend leads to more stolen Kia, Hyundai vehicles in Sanford

Sanford law enforcement authorities are reporting an increase in stolen Kia and Hyundai vehicles that they are attributing to a recent TikTok trend.

The Sanford Police Department says that there has been a “slight increase” in stolen “older model KIAs/Hyundais” as a result of a TikTok challenge that demonstrates how to “circumvent the ignition.”

“If you own either of those vehicle makes, we recommend you park the vehicle in a secure location, like a garage, if possible,” reads a statement from SPD. Additionally, police recommend individuals with KIAs and Hyundais purchase steering wheel locks.

Earlier this year, Clermont Police Department reported a similar trend.

Police say that the issue is a manufacturer’s defect on Kia and Hyundai vehicles built between 2010 and 2021. The vehicles are not equipped with an ignition immobilizer and, as a result, can be compromised using a USB cable.

If you or anyone you know experiences any instances of vehicle theft, contact the the Central Florida Crimeline at 800-423-8477.
