Orange County Schools receiving $5.4 million in vape marketing lawsuit

Orange County Public Schools will receive an estimated $5.4 million as part of a settlement against a vape and e-cigarette company that is accused of marketing its products to children.

In June 2020, Orange County Public Schools joined thousands of other school districts and individuals who entered into litigation against JUUL Labs, Inc. (formerly known as Pax Labs, Inc), accusing the company of mislabeling the nicotine content of its products and improperly marketing them to children.

In December, the company reached a settlement for hundreds of millions of dollars in connection with the design, manufacture, production, advertisement, marketing, distribution, sale, use, and performance of JUUL products.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, March 7, Orange County Public Schools heralded the victory and said it plans to use the funds to purchase vape detectors, as well as provided counseling for students who are caught vaping or smoking.

Last September, the company agreed to settle the cases for $400 million, although the terms and details of that settlement have not been released publicly.
