A new restaurant that serves up Italian dishes with a barbecue twist has opened its doors in the Mills 50 District.
On April 18, Pigzza officially celebrated its grand opening at 1050 N. Mills Avenue. The restaurant is the latest project of Thomas Ward, a self-described ‘porktrepreneur’ and founder of Pig Floyd’s Urban Barbakoa, an eatery a few blocks north of Pigzza.
Pigzza bills itself as a from-scratch kitchen that promises its guests “a contemporary twist on classic Italian dishes and cocktails.” The twist on many of its pizzas and pastas has to do with the incorporation of barbecue flavors into their self-described ‘Italian-ish’ cuisine.
The brisket parm and CBW pizza (bbq chicken, bacon, plus Alabama white sauce) are prime examples. Their spin on shareable appetizers and bar snacks, like cacio e pepe, french fries, and pepperoni artichoke dip, also makes the new eatery unique.
The wine and cocktail list is ample, fitting in with other venues on Mills, like Tori Tori and The Strand. But with outside, inside, and bar seating, Pigzza’s atmosphere is suitable for families alongside adults and work groups for lunch or dinner.
The restaurant joins an ever-changing landscape of restaurants in the Mills 50 District, which has seen multiple openings and closures in recent months.
In January, Kaya celebrated the opening of a new, fine dining Filipino restaurant. Last month, Kaya and seven other local restaurants were named as new additions to the MICHELIN Guide.
Around the same time, Sampaguita opened its first shop focused entirely on Filipino ice cream and baked goods.
Just a few weeks before Kaya and Sampaguita, The Moderne opened a new, upscale bar serving craft cocktails and Asian tapas.
Last October, Framework Craft Coffee opened its first brick and mortar location at 1201 N Mills Avenue, replacing the former tenant, Java J’s Coffeehouse.
Plantee’s, which serves vegan burgers, shakes, and fries, is approaching its first anniversary after opening its doors in the Mills 50 District last May.
Pigzza is closed on Monday and is open from 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 a.m. on Friday and Saturday, and from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Sunday. As of this writing, their food is not yet available across delivery services.
