Second DeLand school goes into lockdown in past week

Less than a week after a threat was deemed unfounded at DeLand High School, police locked down another DeLand school after receiving a tip.

DeLand Police Department officers responded to DeLand Middle School on Tuesday, October 3 in response to a tip received through FortifyFl, which is a tool that allows Florida students and members of the community to report suspicious activity to law enforcement.

Officers and members of the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office placed the campus on hold while they investigated the tip.

The hold was lifted a short time thereafter.

According to police, no threat was located.

“Thank you all for your cooperation. Our detectives will investigate the incident,” reads a statement from DPD.

The department said it would continue to have a police presence at the school “as a precaution.”

The incident comes less than a week after DeLand High School was put into a Code Red lockdown over a threat that was ultimately deemed unfounded.

Both incidents follow a series of similar incidents at DeLand-area schools both this year and last.

In September, a student at DeLand Middle School was arrested after he was found in possession of a firearm.

Last year, DeLand High School was put in lockdown in early September after reports of a possible missing child and weapons on campus.
