17-year-old accused of fatally shooting girl walking along Orlando sidewalk

Orlando police have arrested a 17-year-old suspect who they believe is responsible for fatally shooting a teenage girl in the back while she was walking on a sidewalk.

Caleb Smith was arrested on Friday in connection with the homicide of Anguely Rodriguez-Torres, according to a statement from the Orlando Police Department.

Rodriguez-Torres was shot and killed on October 21 while she was walking along a sidewalk near the intersection of Curry Ford Road and Bel Air Avenue at around 3 p.m.

According to OPD, Rodriguez-Torres and a person with whom she was walking were approached by another man who claimed to know them.

A brief argument ensued before the man, who police identified as Smith, shot Rodriguez-Torres in the back. Smith then allegedly fled the scene on foot.

Rodriguez-Torres was transported to the Orlando Regional Medical Center in critical condition. She later died from her injuries at the hospital.

Smith is facing a charge of second-degree murder with a firearm and possession of a firearm by a delinquent.
