Teen points gun at three students outside Sanford high school

A teenager was arrested this week after he allegedly pointed a firearm at several students outside a high school in Sanford.

On Monday, just before 9 a.m., the school resource officer at Elevation High School (4243 17-92 Highway in Sanford) was notified that a former student, identified as 17-year-old Kailon Young, had arrived on campus to pick up his girlfriend, according to the Sanford Police Department.

While outside the school, near the parking area, Young allegedly pointed a firearm at three students while verbally threatening them.

“Based on the preliminary investigation, it is believed that (Young’s) girlfriend had a recent dispute with one of the victims,” stated the Sanford Police Department in a media release.

On Tuesday, the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office located Young, and he was arrested and transported to the Juvenile Assessment Center without incident.

Young is facing the following charges: aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill (one count) and possessing or discharging weapons or firearms at a school-sponsored event or on school property (one count).

Sanford Police Chief Cecil Smith released the following statement after Young’s arrest: “Our immediate concern is for the safety of the students and staff. The suspect’s [alleged] actions were both reckless and dangerous and we will not tolerate this kind of behavior.”

If you have any information regarding this incident, the Sanford Police Department asks that you call 407-688-5070.
