Volusia government official’s email hacked in midst of scam alerts across area

A Volusia County director had his email hacked this week, amidst escalating reports from law enforcement and government agencies of scams in recent weeks.

On Tuesday, Kevin Captain, who is the director of community information of the Volusia County Government, notified contacts that his email had been compromised earlier in the day.

“My email was compromised this morning,” read a warning from Captain around an hour and a half after a scam email with a malicious link was sent to his email contacts.

“Do not click on any links sent to you by this email address,” reads the email.

The scam email sent earlier that day included the following image.

The image was originally linked to a download that would attempt to steal information from anyone who clicked on it.

Tuesday’s scam follows weeks of warnings by local officials across all of Central Florida regarding a multitude of scams, including some in which the scammers pose as officers.

In one such scam, victims reported receiving text messages and social media messages from sheriff’s offices offering discounts for shirt purchases.

Earlier this week, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office says it received multiple reports of scammers calling residents and posing as members of the court system or law enforcement, threatening to incarcerate them for “missing jury duty.”
