Class on women behind Lake Eola Amphitheater architecture this week

The city will host a class on the history of the female architectural minds behind the Lake Eola Amphitheater.

On Thursday, August 4, Discover Downtown, which is located at 201 S Orange Avenue, will play host to the class from 8:15 a.m. to 10 a.m.

Built in 1924, the Lake Eola Amphitheater, also known as the bandshell, has been a predominant feature in downtown ever since. It has served as the home for many local events, fundraisers, and community gatherings.

Thursday’s class will focus on the women who designed the bandshell, Isabel Roberts and Ida Ryan, who were one of the first all-female architecture practices in the country.

Guest speaker Gregory Stock, an architect, historian, and founding board member of Orlando Foundation for Architecture, will present insight into the history of the bandstand during the upcoming class. Additionally, a 24-minute film about the topic entitled Isabel Roberts’ Pavilion in the Water will be screened during the event.

For more information, or to register for the class, visit the Discover Downtown Women in Architecture webpage.
