20-mile stretch of I-95 shut down as crews respond to five accidents that claimed three lives

A nearly 20-mile stretch of Interstate 95 has been closed as emergency crews respond to multiple accidents that have claimed the lives of at least three people.

According to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol, a series of separate crashes took place early this morning around 1:30 a.m. on the interstate between mile markers 231 and 249. The report indicates that four of the crashes happened in the northbound lanes and involved eleven vehicles. Those four crashes resulted in multiple injuries and one fatality.

Another crash occurred southbound that involved six vehicles and two traffic fatalities.

As of this morning, northbound I-95 is closed from CR-5A (MM 231) to SR-442. Drivers can re-enter northbound on I-95 at SR-442.

Troopers reopened the southbound entrance ramp from SR-442 to southbound I-95 just before 10 a.m. today. Southbound lanes are being re-routed from SR-44 and may re-enter at SR 442.

The northbound lanes of I-95 have been damaged due to the crash and fire. Once the debris has been removed from the crash scene, three northbound lanes will need to be re-paved, according to FHP. A crew is on standby and will complete the emergency repair.

Authorities say that the reopening of the northbound lanes will likely be delayed as a result.
