Spellbound Cafe closes after health inspector finds rodents, mold on sauces

A cafe and psychic shop that opened just over a year ago in DeLand was forced to temporarily close last week after a health inspector found multiple violations, including the presence of mold on sauces and rodent droppings.

Spellbound Cafe, which is located at 208 W Howry Avenue in DeLand, was closed on Friday, August 12, after a health inspector from the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation cited eight health code violations, including two considered high priority.

During the inspection, at least 40 rodent droppings were found all around the kitchen, behind the grill, and by the front counter, among other places. Additionally, a refrigerated drawer with sauces had a mold-like growth. A stop sale was issued for the sauces.

On Saturday, August 13, despite three violations requiring another visit, the restaurant was permitted to reopen.

Spellbound Cafe officially opened its doors for business in March 2021, replacing another cafe that formerly occupied the space.
