State Road 46 closed due to rising St. Johns River

A stretch of State Road 46 near the Seminole County line was closed by the Florida Department of Transportation on Monday as a result of rising water levels from the St. Johns River.

According to FDOT, all lanes of S.R. 46 at the St. Johns River in Brevard County, near the Seminole County line, are currently closed due to rising water levels caused by Hurricane Ian.

The organization is advising motorists who are planning on traveling on S.R. 46 to seek an alternative route or adhere to the following detours.

For those traveling eastbound on S.R. 46 from Sanford to Mims, a detour has been established to turn south on 17-92. From 17-92, motorists may turn onto S.R. 417 to head south, or use Exit 34 to head east on State Road 50. From S.R. 50, motorists should head north onto I-95, then use Exit 223 to access S.R. 46.

For those traveling westbound on S.R. 46 from Mims to Sanford, a detour has been established for motorists heading west on S.R. 46, to turn south on I-95. From I-95, motorists may use Exit 215 to head west on S.R. 50. From S.R. 50, motorists should head north on S.R. 417. and use Exit 50 to head north on 17-92 to access S.R. 46.

Department officials say that a time estimate for reopening the highway is unavailable, but that they will continue to monitor the area and make adjustments as needed.

All those who are using these detours are advised to remember to follow posted signage, avoid distractions, and drive cautiously.
