Seminole County residents dealing with devastating flood waters

Residents across Geneva, Chuluota, Altamonte Springs, and other parts of Seminole County are still dealing with devastating flood waters that rose significantly days after Hurricane Ian passed through the area.

Crews from the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office and Seminole County Fire Department continue to conduct rescues across the area, with hundreds of residents stuck in place because of extremely high flood waters.

Officials say that floodwaters that are still rising along the St. John’s River have forced evacuations across the area, with emergency personnel making rescues by airboat.

Multiple residents of the Little Wekiva area of Altamonte Springs have been stuck in their homes, with no easy way out of the community. Crews have used high water light medium tactical vehicles (LMTV) to assist residents across the area.

Along Lake Harney, first responders have helped multiple families evacuate in recent days, including some who previously expressed an interest in staying on their properties.

Emergency personnel continue to rescue residents who have been trapped in Geneva as well, where flooding ravaged entire communities, homes, cars, and personal belongings.

“Now what we’re going to focus on over the next couple of days is getting the people out, and making sure they are safe,” said Seminole County Sheriff’s Office Lieutenant Bobby Smith.

Smith says that high water levels that have reached as much as 12 feet deep in some areas are causing concern among residents who previously refused to leave their property.
