Orange County issues rabies alert after cat tests positive

Orange County health officials have issued a rabies alert for residences and businesses in the 32808 ZIP code after a cat tested positive last week.

According to Florida Department of Health in Orange County officials, a 60-day rabies alert has been issued for the county after a cat tested positive for the disease on Friday, October 28.

“Residents and visitors in Orange County should be aware that rabies is present in the wild animal population and domestic animals are at risk if not vaccinated,” reads a statement from the FDOH. Officials are advising the public to maintain a “heightened awareness.”

Contact with feral cats, stray dogs, and other wildlife, including raccoons, bats, foxes, skunks, otters, bobcats, and coyotes, should be avoided.

If you, a family member, or your pet has been bitten or scratched by an animal in the rabies alert area, seek medical attention immediately and contact Orange County Animal Services at 407-836-3111.
