Orlando International Airport ranks second worst for flight cancellations

A new study by a transportation company ranked Orlando International Airport as the second worst airport in the nation for flight cancellations, citing over 8,300 in the past year.

According to a report produced by Price4Limo, Orlando International Airport (MCO0 ranked second behind Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) with 8,330 cancellations between June 2021 and June 2022.

That figure represents approximately 2.8% of all flights at the airport.

The number of cancelled flights does not include a large set of recent cancellations that occurred in late September, when the airport shut down operations in response to Hurricane Ian.

In addition to cancelled flights, MCO ranked third for most delayed flights with 53,641 delays, or 18.1% of all flights. Orlando was only outpaced by DFW and Denver International Airport (DEN) in delayed flights.

Those delays equated to approximately 4,332,085 minutes, which ranked second among major airports.

The report also broke down cancellations by airline, showing that Southwest outpaces all other airlines. During the period in question, Southwest cancelled approximately 32,779 flights, which represented over 3,000 more than the next closest carrier, American Airlines.

The company behind the report says it analyzed data from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics on the number of flight delays and cancellations across major U.S. airports and airlines from June 2021 to June 2022.
