The Florida Department of Health in Orange County has issued an alert for the presence of blue-green algae in Starke Lake in Ocoee.
The alert comes in response to a site visit and water sample taken by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection on November 2.
Blue-green algae is a type of bacteria that is common in Florida’s freshwater environments. A bloom occurs when rapid growth of algae leads to an accumulation of individual cells that discolor water and often produce floating mats that emit unpleasant odors. Residents and visitors are advised to avoid drinking, swimming, wading, or using personal watercraft at Starke Lake until otherwise notified.
