Winter Park asking residents to recycle election signs

0

Winter Park officials are asking residents to recycle their election signs to be reused in the creation of clean energy.

According to a press release from the city, Winter Park’s Sustainability Program is partnering with the League of Women Voters of Orange County Natural Resources Committee to recycle election signs generated from this year’s upcoming election.

Winter Park residents may bring their signs and stands to Fire Station 64, located at 1439 Howell Branch Road, beginning Monday, March 7, at noon.

Officials hope the recycling initiative will help prevent an abundance of yard signs from going to local landfills. Instead, signs will be transported to NuCycle Energy where they will be transformed into NuCycle’s Enviro Fuelcubes. The Fuelcubes are then sold to Cemex, a large regional cement manufacturer, where they are used to generate electricity, replacing coal as a cleaner energy source.

This partnership with the league was first initiated during the November 2020 campaign season. At the conclusion of the drive, over 10,000 signs (two tons) were successfully recycled in Winter Park instead of being disposed in a local landfill, according to the city.

For more information regarding the sustainability recycling effort, contact 407-599-3364.

20-mile stretch of I-95 shut down as crews respond to five accidents that claimed three lives

A nearly 20-mile stretch of Interstate 95 has been closed as emergency crews respond to multiple accidents that have claimed the lives of at least three people.

According to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol, a series of separate crashes took place early this morning around 1:30 a.m. on the interstate between mile markers 231 and 249. The report indicates that four of the crashes happened in the northbound lanes and involved eleven vehicles. Those four crashes resulted in multiple injuries and one fatality.

Another crash occurred southbound that involved six vehicles and two traffic fatalities.

As of this morning, northbound I-95 is closed from CR-5A (MM 231) to SR-442. Drivers can re-enter northbound on I-95 at SR-442.

Troopers reopened the southbound entrance ramp from SR-442 to southbound I-95 just before 10 a.m. today. Southbound lanes are being re-routed from SR-44 and may re-enter at SR 442.

The northbound lanes of I-95 have been damaged due to the crash and fire. Once the debris has been removed from the crash scene, three northbound lanes will need to be re-paved, according to FHP. A crew is on standby and will complete the emergency repair.

Authorities say that the reopening of the northbound lanes will likely be delayed as a result.

Orlando redistricting underway as advisory board hosts first meeting

0

The process to redraw Orlando’s six districts is underway.

The Orlando Redistricting Advisory Board held its first official meeting on Tuesday evening at Orlando City Hall.

The board is compiled of nine representatives that were appointed by Orlando City Council’s six commissioners and Mayor Buddy Dyer during a February meeting. During Tuesday’s meeting, board members introduced themselves and briefly discussed the structure of the board.

In 2010, when the city last redrew its districts, the goal was to divide each district evenly to include between 39,000 and 40,000 residents.

As of April 2020, the population of Orlando was tallied at 307,573. In 2010, the city’s population was around 238,300.

Currently, the only district with a population above 50,000 is District 1. The advisory board will be tasked with making sure that each district includes as close to 51,262 residents as possible.

That means that the boundaries of the city will likely be redrawn to skew towards District 1, which incorporates the southwest quadrant of the city.

The board will host a series of public meetings for the community across each of the six districts. Those sessions are open to the public and will allow attendees to provide input regarding proposed changes to the districts.

To learn more about how to participate in a community meeting, can provide input, visit the City of Orlando Redistricting webpage.
