Thomas Francis Surina

Thomas Francis Surina of Sanford FL, formerly of Shelton, CT passed away peacefully at his home on April 16th with his beloved wife Claudia by his side.

Tommy was born on June 2, 1954, and was the son of the late Joseph Surina and Mary Bodarczyk. He was raised in Shelton and attended the Shelton School system, graduating from Shelton High School in 1972. Tommy played several sports at Shelton High School and always remained a Shelton Gael as he followed their sports programs throughout his life. After graduating, he went on to work with Coca-Cola for 17 years and then with the City of Shelton Highway Department until his retirement.

Tommy was a fan of anything that had to do with sports. He was especially passionate about his Boston Red Sox, Bruins, Celtics and the New York Giants. Always ready to defend them if you thought otherwise. Usually with many friends Tommy would take his yearly pilgrimage to Saratoga to bet on, what he called, the donkeys. Not betting on the gray horses was the usual tip of the day. He was a free spirit, no frills and easy-going type of guy. Being easy to talk to resulted in many friends that he made throughout his lifetime. You would never know Tommy was in a decade-long battle that would take his life. He kept to the script, always laughing, and joking. Not once did he let his condition overwhelm his spirit. A true Shelton son.

Besides his wife, Tommy is survived by Kenneth Surina, his brother and several nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews, and great-great nieces and a great-great nephew.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, May 4, 2024 at DeGusipe Funeral Home located at 905 Laurel Ave., Sanford, FL 32771. Visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., followed by a reception at the funeral home from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
