Garage fire breaks out in Winter Park home while family away

A residence in Winter Park was consumed by a garage fire that broke out while the family wasn’t home.

Winter Park Fire Department crews responded to the garage fire after they were notified by neighbors who were aware that the family was not home.

No injuries were reported as a result of the fire, but the home sustained substantial damage.

Authorities are warning the public that garage fires are quite common and can move fast. They advise that residents should store flammable items like oil, gasoline, paints, and propane away from the home in a shed.

Additionally, wherever possible, residents should install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in garages. Finally, residents should ensure that garage clutter is at a minimum, as garages that are packed with items can limit access for firefighters and create more burning hazards.

In September, Winter Park firefighters extinguished a separate garage fire at a local residence.

That same month, another garage fire at a Winter Park home was caused by a lightning strike, according to authorities.
