Man gets life in prison for having sex with child ‘for years,’ soliciting sexual photos from others

A 64-year-old man was sentenced to life in federal prison for engaging in sexual activity with a child for multiple years and coercing other children to send him sexually explicit photos and videos.

Wayne Joseph Cavins, of Deltona, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Timothy J. Corrigan on Friday, May 19, to spend life in prison for attempted online enticement of a minor to engage in sexual activity.

During their investigation, law enforcement authorities determined that Cavins had physically and sexually abused a minor to whom he had access to for several years. That discovery came about after police began investigating Cavins attempts at coercing a separate child to engage in separate activity.

According to court records, from December 23, 2020 through January 29, 2021, Cavins attempted to persuade, induce, entice, and coerce a child that he met through social media to engage in sex. In text messages between Cavins and the child, he detailed his interest in engaging in sexual activity with the child, including specifying possible hotel locations for them to meet.

Cavins persuaded and enticed the child to produce child sex abuse materials on several occasions that depicted specific content that he requested.

After he was arrested, Cavins admitted to talking to the children and that he knew what he was doing was wrong.

During a search of his devices, authorities uncovered multiple images of child sex abuse materials, including images of the child that he met online.

Cavins pled guilty on November 15, 2022. His sentence also requires that he serve a life term of supervised release and register as a sex offender, according to court records.
