Thirteen monkeypox cases in Central Florida, rest of state, nation reporting ten times more than last month

Thirteen cases of monkeypox have been reported in Central Florida as part of a nationwide outbreak of the virus this year.

According to the latest data available through the Florida Department of Health Reportable Diseases Frequency Report, Alachua, Lake, Seminole, and Orange counties have reported cases of the virus, which produces similar symptoms to small pox, including fever, headache, muscle pain, chills and fatigue.

Among the 13 cases reported in Central Florida, 10 have been reported in Orange County, with one case reported in each of the other three counties.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports 2,108 cases of monkeypox virus across the United States as of Tuesday, July 19.

That number is up tenfold from the 200 cases reported less than one month ago.

Across the state of Florida, the number of reported cases has seen a similar increase, from 16 cases reported in late June, to 180 cases reported as of this week.

Florida currently has the fourth highest number of cases in the nation, trailing only New York, California, and Illinois.

According to the CDC, symptoms of the monkeypox virus are generally more mild than in small pox cases. For more information on the monkeypox disease, visit the CDC monkeypox website.
