72-year-old man killed after trying to drain pool during storm

A 72-year-old man from Deltona was found dead after her he attempted to drain his pool during heavy rainfall and drowned in a canal behind his home.

Volusia County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a home on Poinciana Lane, near Lake Bethel, around 1 a.m. last night after receiving a call from the man’s wife. She reported that the man, who has not been identified by police, disappeared after heading outside.

According to VCSO, the man was using a hose to drain the pool down a hill and into a 30-foot-wide canal. A steep decline into the water was extremely soft and slippery due to heavy rain.

During their search for the man, deputies found his flashlight and were able to spot the victim in the canal behind the home.

The man, who was unresponsive, was pulled from the water by several deputies, who attempted to perform CPR until paramedics arrived.

The man could not be revived and was later pronounced deceased at the hospital.
