Sinkhole in downtown Orlando closes major thoroughfare

A possible sinkhole that opened on a major thoroughfare running through downtown Orlando has caused a road closure while crews work to address the issue.

Crews have been working since Friday to address a sinkhole that opened up along South Orange Avenue, just south of Park Lake Street, as a result of heavy rainfall caused by Hurricane Ian.

Orange Avenue closed in downtown Orlando after sinkhole
A busy stretch of S Orange Avenue has been closed off due to a possible sinkhole

A stretch of the busy thoroughfare has been closed off and a detour has been implemented starting at East Marks Street and proceeding through Park Lake Street on to Colonial Drive.

The stretch of road in question was recently repaved and renovated with larger, multi-modal paths as part of the city’s efforts to improve pedestrian mobility.

The road closure is one of many around Orange County in the wake of Hurricane Ian, which produced record high rainfall and flooding that was described by local officials as unprecedented.

On Sunday, Orlando officials advised that a water main break has taxed the city’s water management systems. Residents are being advised to use as little water as possible so as not to further overwhelm the system.
