Two victims identified in separate weekend Orlando shootings

Law enforcement authorities have identified two victims from different shootings that took place this past weekend in Orlando.

According to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, the first victim was identified as 44-year-old Willie Slater, Jr. Slater was shot and killed at around 1:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 9 in the 1100 block of St. Nicholas Avenue.

Deputies responded to the area that evening and encountered Slater, who was originally identified as a “man in his 20s,” lying on the ground.

He was pronounced deceased on the scene.

Friends and family have taken to social media to share an outpouring of love for Slater, who would have turned 45 in September.

“I’m going to miss you, brother,” reads one Facebook comment. Known by a collection of nicknames, many of his friends referred to him as “Champ.”

“RIP my G, you did your thing. No doubt, a champ.”

A second victim, 61-year-old Moises Mejias, was identified in a separate shooting that took place in the 1600 block of Vagabond Lane just past 1:30 a.m. on Sunday, April 10.

Mejias was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The investigations into Slater’s and Mejias’ killings is ongoing.
