Sprinkler stops kitchen fire in Maitland apartment

A fast-acting emergency sprinkler system stopped a kitchen fire in an apartment in Maitland on Monday.

On Monday evening, a fire broke out in the kitchen of an apartment at the Brickstone Maitland Summit, which is located at 9000 Summit Centre Way. According to the Maitland Fire Rescue Department, a sprinkler system was activated during the fire that extinguished and controlled the flames.

“Cooking is the leading cause of home fires, so it is critical to have a portable extinguisher within close proximity,” reads a post from MFRD social media.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, sprinklers are 97% effective in controlling fires.

“Monday’s apartment fire shows just how fast and effective sprinklers work, minimizing the damage and keeping flames from spreading before firefighters arrive on scene,” says MFRD. In lieu of sprinkler systems, fire rescue officials recommend portable, multi-purpose fire extinguishers that can be used on all types of home fires.

The Maitland Fire Rescue Department offers classes on how to operate and extinguish a fire with an extinguisher. For information, contact the department at 407-539-6228.
