A 9-year-old girl was rushed to a local hospital after she allegedly found an unsecured gun in Pine Hills on Friday.
Orange County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to reports of a shooting in the 1800 block of Powers Drive on Friday, June 2.
According to police, a 9-year-old girl found an unsecured gun in the home and was accidentally shot.
The girl was transported to the Arnold Palmer Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to recover from her injuries.
In a statement issued by the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, authorities emphasized the importance of exercising proper gun safety through storage.
“We urge gun owners to make sure they properly store and secure their firearms to keep them out of the hands of children,” reads a statement from OCSO.
The sheriff’s office is advising gun owners to keep their firearms unloaded and out of the sight of children, to store ammunition separately, to use a safe or lockbox when storing an unloaded gun, and to use a child restraint gun lock.
