A 56-year-old bicyclist who was crossing Colonial Drive was killed after he was struck by a vehicle that fled the scene.

The hit-and-run took place near the intersection of Colonial Drive and 3rd Street on Saturday, October 21, at around 7:52 a.m.

According to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol, the man, who was from Bithlo, was crossing Colonial Drive in a southerly direction. The report notes that the man was not crossing within a crosswalk, and that he was not wearing a helmet.

While he was crossing, the bicyclist was struck by a vehicle that was traveling eastbound on Colonial Drive, in the outside lane, just east of 3rd Street.

The vehicle, which police believe was possibly a Ford sport utility vehicle, fled the scene. The man was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The Florida Highway Patrol is currently investigating the hit-and-run vehicular homicide and is asking anyone with information to contact FHP at 407-737-2213, or the Central Florida Crimeline at 800-423-8477.
