A 15-year-old student was arrested after he was caught with a gun at Winter Park High School on Wednesday.
According to the Winter Park Police Department, on Wednesday, September 14, a tip was received by the department through Fortify Florida that indicated a student had a gun in his backpack and was on the campus of Winter Park High School, which is located at 2100 Summerfield Road.
Multiple WPPD police officers responded and the school was placed into lockdown for a brief time. After they made contact with the student, who is in ninth grade, they searched his backpack and found a handgun and a magazine with three bullets.
Authorities say that another student reported the boy through the Fortify Florida app.
“We continue to strongly encourage our students ‘if you see something, say something’ to school officials or via the Fortify Florida app,” reads a social media post from WPPD.
The student that was arrested was charged with possession of a firearm on school property and disruption of a school function.
The incident follows a week in which multiple local schools have dealt with gun and bomb threats.
On Monday, DeLand High School was put on lockdown after reports of a possible missing child and weapons on campus.
That incident took place just a day after a social media scare put Lyman High School students and parents on edge. After an investigation by police, that threat was dispelled as “non-credible.”
In a separate incident last week, a Glock BB gun was recovered from a student’s backpack after a violent tussle with police.
