City awarded $50,000 child obesity prevention grant to benefit Parramore community

The city of Orlando accepted a $50,000 federal grant as part of its effort to combat childhood obesity and provide additional resources to those in the Parramore community.

The United States Conference of Mayors awarded Orlando second place in the Large Cities category for the organization’s Childhood Obesity Prevention, Environmental Health, and Sustainability Award.

The grant will be used to fund the Parramore Kids Zone Youth Beekeeper Training Program, which teaches students about hydroponic growing and gardening.

As part of the award criteria, part of the funds must be used to organize educational sessions on gardening and/or renewable energy for Parramore residents, distribute 2,500 pounds of produce in the community, and distribute 30 trees to local residents.

According to city records, the grant award will be managed by Families, Parks, and Recreation, the Parramore Kidz Zone and Black Bee Honey program, and the city’s office of Sustainability & Resilience.
